best practices for the longevity of your rug
Clean & Care FAQs
Annual Maintenance Guidelines for Rug Care
Rugs exposed to direct sunlight will fade over time, even if fade-resistant. To
balance color & evenly distribute wear, rotate your rug every 6-12 months.
Professional cleaning services should be used at least once a year before your rug begins to show soil and wear.
Regular Maintenance Guideline for Rug Care
Vacuum rug at least once a week to keep loose dirt from accumulating and embedding deep into fibers. Embedded dirt & soil will cause fiber crushing damage under foot traffic.
DO NOT VACUUM WITH A BEATER BAR!
Beater Bars should never be used on handmade rug products. The rotating bristle bars will cause permanent damage & distortion to the yarn fibers. Many of today’s vacuums are super high powered.
The high suction can pull out the threads from the back of the carpet or rug causing sprouts and excessive fuzzing.
Avoid Oreck or Dyson vacuums for these reasons.
Spills & Stains
The best way to remove a stain is to tend to it immediately before it sets in. Using a white cloth, blot up as much as the liquid stain as possible. If rug was fiber protected, immediate blotting will be all that’s required.
Household cleaning products to keep on hand:
1. Dawn liquid dishsoap (or similar ) PH Balanced & safe to use on wool and other
fibers to clean most types of stains.
2. White Vinegar – Vinegar is excellent to use for absorbing stains & cleaning on
wool and all other fibers.
Cleaning Tricks for Oil, Grease & Soil Stains
Make a solution using a capful of Dawn liquid dishsoap (or similar) mixed with 8oz
glass of water. Using a white cloth, use solution to clean soiled stain. Blot only! Never aggressively rug at stain or you will cause yarn distortion. Keep repeating as necessary. Always rinse out stain area to remove any left soap residue before allowing to air dry.
Cleaning Tricks for Cosmetics, Lotions & Food
Make a solution using a capful of a clear-colored Dawn liquid dishsoap (or similar) +
1 part white vinegar + 8oz glass of water. Using a white cloth, use solution to clean soiled stain. Blot only! Never aggressively rub at stain or you will cause yarn distortion. After cleaning, rinse out stain area to remove any leftover soap residue before allowing to air dry.
Cleaning Tricks for Pet Urine, Perfume & Alkaline Spills
Make a solution using a capful of a clear colored Dawn liquid dishsoap (or similar)
+ 2 parts white vinegar + 8oz glass of water.
Spray stained area. Allow it to soak in for 30 minutes before using a white cloth to
blot up. Never aggressively rug at stain or you will cause yarn distortion. Rinse
stain out with water thoroughly to remove soap residue and air dry before use.
Make Your Own Homemade Carpet Shampoo
Boil a pot of hot water & mix in:
- Three (3) tablespoons of a clear-colored Dawn liquid dishsoap (or similar)
- Add 1 cup of white vinegar
- Add 2 cups of baking soda

Loving Your Rug
-
Inherent Beauty of Handmade Rugs
Our rugs are made by skilled & generational-trained artisan weavers.
It is the irregular weaving found in handmade rug products that contribute to the inherent beauty & authentic texture you are paying for that cannot be found in machine tufted products. Variances
are inevitable and not considered manufacturer defects. -
No Beater Bar on Handmade Rugs
Proper vacuuming is essential for the long-term care & maintenance:
- Vacuuming a handmade rug with a beater bar or strong suction (Dyson) will cause permanent yarn damage & distortion.
- Vacuum at least once a week & across the traffic pattern to help prevent matting.
- Maintain rug longevity by rotating every 6 months & professionally clean every 12 months.
-
Rug Pads
We custom cut to fit the right premium rug pad needed for each rug type based on it's construction & quality, rug use & rug size.
- Duo Lock Rug Pad: Premium cushioned, high performance dual purpose non-slip.
- Solid Grip Plus Pad: Maximum surface coverage to protect floors in a low cushioned pile height for flatweaves.
- Outdoor Rug Pad: Open weave construction allows for air flow to avoid trapping moisture.
